Product questions

What is the difference between DTM and DTM-Pro?
The main difference between the DTM and DTM-Pro models is connectivity. The DTM-Pro is designed for seamless, hands-free work, offering wireless data transmission to the app and live charting. While the DTM model doesn't have these wireless features, it can still be used with the Tension App inside App SpokeCalc for tension measurement and other functions.
Can custom tension tables be ordered on demand?
The starter pack includes six (6) spoke tension tables, covering 90%—or more—of every builder’s needs. It includes a range of round spokes, from ultralight models to e-bike-rated options, plus the two most common bladed spokes.
That said, custom tension charts can be created, and the device can be calibrated for specific spokes, including Sapim and DT Swiss models. If you’d like to adjust the default spoke list to better fit your needs, contact me at [email protected]. Additional spokes may be added at cost.
Why do both models come with a digital screen instead of one being classic, analogue?
While an analogue dial gauge gives the tool a retro, elegant look, my experience has shown that a large, high-contrast digital screen provides a clearer tension reading without requiring extra focus on the gauge. Digital screens also have a slight lag, which helps stabilize readings and prevents abrupt deviations—yet they remain just as accurate. This results in more consistent, repeatable measurements, making tensioning more efficient.
Is the digital gauge on both models the same?
No. The budget-friendly version features a simple yet highly visible, high-contrast screen that displays large readings. However, it does not offer any connectivity to a PC, tablet, or smartphone. In contrast, the premium version includes a Bluetooth-enabled dial gauge that seamlessly transmits data to the app with the press of the Data button. Additionally, the premium model’s gauge is sleeker and lighter.
Do I need a smartphone to use DTM-Pro?
No, you don’t need a smartphone in the workshop to use either version of the tool. However, if you want to wirelessly transmit data with the premium DTM-Pro tension meter, you’ll need a receiving device (tablet, PC, or smartphone) that supports Bluetooth.
Can I upgrade my DTM to DTM-Pro later?
Yes! Both models share the same construction and components, with the only difference being the type of digital gauge. If you’re interested in upgrading to the wireless premium dial gauge, contact [email protected] for details on the swap and recalibration. You can also upgrade later once you’re more familiar with the device.

App & Integration

Does DTM still work with the app?
Yes! Both models are fully compatible with the app. The only difference is how they transmit data. The standard DTM model requires manual entry of tension values, while the DTM-Pro can send readings wirelessly via Bluetooth. Regardless of the model, you can use the app to log, analyze, and manage your tension data efficiently.
Thinking of using the non-wireless DTM while still working efficiently with the app? A small Bluetooth-supported number pad (like a num pad) connected to your phone or PC can help you take readings with ease, minimizing manual input effort.
What features does the app offer for DTM & DTM-Pro users?
Both models are fully compatible with the Tension app inside the SpokeCalc software. You can generate detailed visual charts, including radar charts, and get a complete summary of your tensioning process with key performance metrics.
Additionally, the app includes pre-saved tension tables, making it easy to get started. Simply import your tool using its serial number for quick access to the correct data.
Can I buy the app membership separately?
Of course. Feel free to try the App SpokeCalc any time and select either monthly or anually based memberships. In offseason, you can also skip a month or two and then renew membership once the season kicks off and you are back to wheelbuilding.
What’s included in the App SpokeCalc memberships?
SpokeCalc is available in three tier-based membership programs. The Season Pro monthly membership offers all the essential tools for a wheel builder, including the spoke calculator, tension app, saving components with dimensions, adding tools, creating wheels, and more.
Upgrading to Master Builder unlocks the Workshop module, which allows you to create and record service activities for your builds, as well as add clients.
The Marketplace module available with the Master Builder plan lets you create products from your wheels, use a quick quotation maker, and handle invoicing.
Can I use DTM-Pro with any wheelbuilding software?
It depends on the software. If the program — whether it's an Excel sheet, a web-based app, or another tool — supports content-editable fields like input boxes, the Tension Meter will transmit data as if it were a keyboard. This allows seamless data entry without additional steps.
